Before Buddha was born, his mother dreamed of a white elephant. Before an empire was founded, a sleeping man dreamed of a tree. The pregnancy dream is where history has always gone looking for the future.
Almost every tradition reads a pregnancy dream as something real but not yet visible — an increase on its way. The old interpreters called it coming wealth, a hidden matter ripening, or the announcement of a remarkable child; modern psychology calls it a project, a change or a self still gestating. Whether or not you are actually pregnant changes the reading entirely.

The announcing dream
The ancient Near East treated birth and dreams as neighbouring provinces of the same country: both were places where the gods left messages. The Assyrian dream-omen tablets, which survive in fragments, include entries on dreams of childbirth, read as omens for the whole household. Egypt added the practical side: women slept in temple precincts hoping for dreams that promised conception, under the protection of household gods of childbirth. And across the whole region runs the oldest motif of all — the annunciation dream, in which the birth of a remarkable person is announced to the mother in her sleep. Kings and prophets, in the old stories, tend to arrive twice: once in the dream, once in the world.

Artemidorus is at his most characteristic on pregnancy, because it shows his method: the same dream means different things to different lives. For a poor dreamer, pregnancy promised improvement — one carries more than before, so one will have more than before. For the rich it could mean cares and burdens, since whatever grows must be fed. For the unmarried it pointed toward marriage; for the sick, outcomes varied with the dream's details. He even recorded pregnancy dreams for men, read again by circumstance rather than scandal. The constant underneath is the body's plain arithmetic: to be pregnant is to contain more than yourself, and the interpreter's job is to decide whether the surplus is treasure or weight.

Increase, and hidden things surfacing
The interpretations gathered under Ibn Sirin's name tend to read pregnancy as increase in worldly goods — for a woman or a man, the dream promises that the dreamer's share of the world is growing. But the tradition also notices what pregnancy actually does: it hides something, and then it reveals it. So a pregnancy dream can announce that a concealed matter is ripening toward the light — a secret that will out, a plan about to become public, a dispute approaching its term. As always in this school, the dreamer's real condition steers the meaning. The dream's message is less "a child is coming" than "something is coming to term".

The child announced in advance
East Asia built an entire genre on this symbol: the fetal dream — taimeng in Korea, where the tradition is still very much alive — dreamed around conception and read as a preview of the child. Dragons and snakes traditionally announce sons; flowers, fruit and jewels, daughters; a tiger promises a bold child, a pearl a beautiful one. The dream need not even belong to the mother — a grandmother or aunt can dream it on her behalf. Queen Maya's white elephant, announcing the Buddha, is the tradition's most famous ancestor. At the other end of Asia, the Ottoman foundation legend gives the motif imperial scale: Osman dreams of a moon descending into his breast and a tree rising from his body to shade the whole world — a dynasty dreamed as a pregnancy, the world-tree carried like a child. Folk Europe kept a humbler version: a pregnancy dream meant news or gain on its way.

What is gestating in you
Sleep research starts with the literal case: people who are actually pregnant dream more, remember more, and dream more vividly — hormonal changes and fragmented sleep mean more awakenings out of REM, exactly when dreams are caught. Dreams of water, small animals, the baby arriving early or absurdly articulate are all common and all normal. For everyone else, the psychological reading follows Jung's instinct that the psyche uses the body's grammar: pregnancy is the state of carrying something that is coming whether you schedule it or not. A new role, a book half-written, an identity outgrowing its old container — the dream says it has a due date. Men dream it too, expectant fathers especially, and researchers treat that as rehearsal rather than oddity: the mind trying on the size of what's coming.

- Finding out you're pregnant in the dream — the classic beginning-of-something dream: the news itself, not the birth, is the point. Something has already started.
- Being heavily pregnant or overdue — old interpreters read nearness to term as nearness of the promised increase; modern readers hear "overdue" literally: something in your life is past ready.
- Giving birth — completion and arrival in nearly every tradition; Artemidorus read the details of the delivery for the fortune of the outcome.
- Someone else pregnant — folk lore says news is coming from that person; psychology suspects the growing thing is yours, projected onto a safer figure.
- Pregnant with something strange — an animal, an object, a monster: the fetal-dream tradition read the creature as the child's character; modern readers as your feelings about what you're making.
- A man dreaming he is pregnant — already in Artemidorus, read by circumstance; today most often an expectant father, or anyone carrying a responsibility that is starting to show.
How to read your own pregnancy dream
Begin with the fact the traditions all quietly agree on: this dream is about timing. Ask how far along the dream-pregnancy was — a first flutter and an overdue term are different messages about the same thing. Ask how you felt — joy, dread and impatience each name your real relation to whatever is growing. And ask the blunt question the fetal-dream tradition asks: what, in your waking life, is unannounced but already underway? If you are actually pregnant, subtract the omen entirely: your sleep has changed, your dreams have grown loud, and that is biology being generous with imagery, not prophecy.
