One line for each symbol — and four thousand years of argument folded into every line. The whole archive, compressed to a sentence apiece.
Dictionary · A to Z · five traditions per line
Every entry below is a compression. Behind each sentence sit five bodies of interpretation that rarely met and often disagreed: the omen tablets of Mesopotamia and Egypt, Artemidorus writing in the second-century Roman world, the school gathered under Ibn Sirin's name, the Zhougong manual and the village lore of China and Europe, and the modern psychology of Freud, Jung and the sleep lab. Where the five broadly agree, the line says so plainly; where they argue, the line names the sides. For the most-dreamed symbols — snake, teeth, falling, water and some thirty others — a full comparative reading exists, and the entry ends with a link to it. For everything else, the line is the reading.
